Lobby: The Arroyo

So let’s start on the first floor, as you enter the James Museum, you will be amazed how beautiful the lobby is called The Arroyo. The soaring sandstone walls gives you a different kind of feel. I spent at least 30 minutes at the lobby taking photos. Thus, the sound of the warfalls is so soothing and refreshing. It is so relaxing plus the background music brings you to their 1800-1900’s bygone era.

Me here still mourning for the loss of my little girl (🐶🐾) Little Bit and decided to go to St. Pete and was surprised how beautiful and big this museum is. This museum is a must-visit!! ❤️

As you step into the Arroyo Lobby, you’re greeted by awe-inspiring, lifesize statues that command attention. These striking sculptures bring the spirit of the West to life, capturing intricate details and powerful expressions that make you feel as if you’ve stepped into a living tableau of history and art

1. Introductory Gallery

This gallery provides an overview of the museum’s founding and collection, featuring works that highlight the history of the American West. These lifesize sculptures are the remarkable creations of John Coleman, whose artistry brings each figure to life with incredible detail and expression. A Deep Dive into Western Heritage

For those fascinated by history, the museum offers a profound insight into the heritage of the American West. The exhibits celebrate the legacy of Native American cultures, the pioneering spirit of cowboys, and the timeless beauty of Western landscapes. The museum’s collection highlights the bravery, struggles, and triumphs that have shaped the West’s unique cultural identity.

So let’s go to the second floor using stairs, they have elevator and again I am fascinated by the sandstone walls. James Museum is more than 88,000 square feet with 8 distinctive galleries and every gallery has different theme and wall color. This sculpture below will greet you as you step on the 2nd floor. The sandstone walls create a warm, earthy ambiance, with their natural textures and soft hues evoking the timeless beauty of the desert.

Let’s go inside the gallery and let me transport you to the 1800-1900 Western Era.

2. Exquisite Wildlife Art Gallery

Animal lovers will find themselves enchanted by the museum’s extensive wildlife art collection. The meticulously crafted sculptures and vibrant paintings capture the essence of wildlife in their natural habitats. From majestic eagles soaring through the skies to the serene presence of deer in the woods, the artwork vividly brings nature’s wonders to life.

Every paintings has description on the side that tells you the artist, the year and history.

3. Early West Gallery

While most of the James collection features works created after 1980, this gallery highlights Western art from earlier generations. With paintings predating 1950, it showcases the foundational contributions of artists like Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, and the Taos Society of Artists, who gained popularity through their captivating Western themes and savvy marketing efforts.

Showcasing some of the oldest pieces in the collection, this gallery includes artworks from the early explorations of the American West. In this gallery also showcases the early Chinese Immigrants.

Dark Day on the Plains by David Yorke

This painting, depicting the tragic killing of the bison, fills me with sadness. It’s a stark reminder of the devastating impact of human actions on nature

Every exhibit has explanation right next to it that makes it better for visitors to fully understand what the painting truly depicts.

6. Native Artists Gallery

The Native Artists gallery highlights 20th- and 21st-century works by American Indian artists, showcasing Indigenous perspectives through diverse styles and techniques.
